The meaning of Kiini Ujuzi :
Kiini and Ujuzi are Kiswahili words. Kiini means heart/essence. Ujuzi means knowing/experience. Together, Kiini Ujuzi means knowing from the heart. This artwork is a symbolic representation of the heart as a perceptive faculty of consciousness, but also a transmitter of energy. For the majority of indigenous cultures around the world the mind arises from the energetic center that corresponds to the location of the physical heart and not considered to be a function of the brain. This understanding produces an intuitive awareness and experience of energy/vibrations that is "felt" with a clarity unencumbered by cerebral over-processing. This is opposed by the western notion that the rational intellect is the supreme (if not the only way) that we process information. The rational mind can use reason to justify almost any behavior and abstract itself out of the responsibility of owning the consequences of it's action. Our thoughts and expressions originate from a combination of faculties which includes the brain but not at all limited to it. Kiini Ujuzi is a celebration of indigenous ways of knowing and being that recognizes that interconnectedness is a fundamental quality of nature, the universe, and our own social dynamics as humans.
Interesting note: The heart is a much greater generator of electromagnetic activity than the brain. The field of electromagnetic energy is scientifically detectable and extends several feet beyond our bodies. The emotional disposition, mental state, and other elements of a person's constitution that affects their biorhythms are all pronounced in a subtle way though this field of energy. Also, we are affected by the magnetic field of others around us. We are all walking transmitters, and receivers.
Another amazing fact: Babies create verbal sounds that come as a result of changing states in the various organs of their bodies. For example, a hungry stomach initiates a verbal sound that is consistent among human babies around the world. So does the feeling of being cold, sleepy, or lonely. These verbal expressions are not a cerebral attempt at communicating an artificial language but is the body itself speaking. Mothers around the world that can tune into the nuances of their baby's vocalizations can tell exactly what their baby needs. Unfortunately we see this response-ability compromised in our modern over intellectualized society.
The heart speaks and the heart listens.
