Dear Martin performance Photo by Mary Gearhart On November 2nd 2018 String Theory Theater performed Sincerely Martin at the Waverly Branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library system. Sincerly Martin is a puppet performance that takes place in a classroom. Two students deliver a presentation as part of Mr. Biko's history class. The presentation focuses on the last few years of Dr. King's life where his activism's new focus became increasingly threatening to the establishment earned him the nickname "radical Martin". Information is also shared concerning the little known civil court case in which the King estate charged the U.S. government with assassinating Dr. King. and the King Estate won due to overwhelming evidence against government agencies and their co-conspirators.
Later that same day we traveled to Takoma Park to perform "A Collab Story" at the Takoma Park Community Center. We shared the stage with other puppeteers for the second annual DC Puppet Slam. A Collab Story is a performance about siblings Malik and Nafasi as they take a trip into their imagination. Pictures from A Collab Story: The summer of 2018 saw me creating and performing with large parade style puppets for the first time.-an idea sparked 19 years ago when I camped out in the woods of Vermont to witness "The Insurrection Circus" presented by Bread and Puppet. So, finally, on July 20-22, String Theory Theater (myself, my daughters, a few honorary members of STT) along with adventurous festival goers performed at Artscape in Bmore. Our performance, titled Elemental Procession honored the four elements of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water and the various life that the elements infuse. Thanks to BOPA for funding STT's Elemental Procession at Artscape.
After Artscape we had an amazing time conducting workshops with youth and families from the Cherry Hill community to create more large puppets for the second annual Cherry Hill Art and Music Festival on September 22nd. It was truly an awe inspiring event full of music, dance, visual art, poetry, inspirational speakers, an awesome abundance of community spirit, and of course 10 foot tall puppets making several appearances thought the day. Our puppets for this event also partially shared a elemental theme - with the sun and moon representing guardian ancestors and our Mama Shirley puppet representing a keeper of community. Immense thanks to the Youth Resiliency Institute for creating this profoundly impactful event, and thanks to their funders for funding the workshops and the festival. The 2018 Crankiefest put on by the Creative Alliance was amazing once again! String Theory Theater shared the Stage with some of Baltimore's own homegrown talent as well as visiting artists. Azaria continues to grow as a performer and I am in constant appreciation and awe of this human being. Looking forward to some performance projects on the horizon for 2018. I will post as events are confirmed.
December 22 - 8PM Come and enjoy a puppety celebration of the Winter Solstice with String Theory Theater (Dirk and Azaria) as they present several short skits employing hand puppets and crankies (light and shadow box theater).
Light refreshments will be served. This is a free event! (donations to String Theory Theater are happily accepted) Gallery 1448 is located at 1448 East Baltimore Street. Baltimore MD 21231 I created a short film titled "Rise" for this year's finale of the Lantern Parade put on by Creative Alliance in Baltimore. There were thousands in attendance, definitely the largest audience physically gathered for the presentation of my art. The amazing Navasha Daya performed during the second half of the animation which played on a large screen behind her. It was a magical moment as she was designed (with body paint and props by me) to look like an anthropomorphic Mother Earth figure from the featured in the animation.
Once again it's on!
