Dirk Joseph is a visual artist, muralist, sculptor, puppeteer, filmmaker, art educator, and community arts facilitator. Born in Trinidad and raised in Hempstead, New York, he has long been rooted in community-based arts organizing, serving as president of the Long Island Black Artists Association and co-founding the Community Arts Collective in Hempstead in the early 1990s. Since moving to Baltimore in 2002, he has partnered with schools, nonprofits, and neighborhood organizations to create public art, facilitate workshops, and develop community-engaged projects. He is the founder of String Theory Theater, a traveling puppetry troupe, and Art Lab Bmore, a multipurpose community art space.
His work explores transformation, community, nature, spirituality, and Indigenous wisdom. He views art as both ritual and a healing technology—a way to reconnect with our authentic humanity beyond colonial and capitalist systems. Through his community workshops, he creates spaces for individual and collective creativity, reflection, and connection, inviting neighbors and families to engage their shared imagination as a catalyst for future visioning, resilience, and collective healing.
Currently DIrk is seeking opportunities to create public art, specifically murals. He has complete two large scale public murals as well as interior murals in private homes. He is available for private and public mural work.
