"Communion" - mural

Communion is intended to inspire a sense of immersion in nature's flow, particularly the process of maturation from seed to flower, a cyclical process of nature that we are all a part of. In two areas of the mural I used the West African Adinkra symbol "Asase Ye Duru"which translates to "the Earth has weight" (heavy with the density and diversity of life). Asase Ye Duru represents the power and sacredness of our Mother Earth and a call to respect and preserve the natural matrix of life and elements that is our extended being. Communion was installed on one of the support columns of the Jones Falls Expressway in downtown Baltimore in May of 2025. It is part of a project called the Urban Oasis Mural Project in which over 20 of the columns were painted by local Baltimore muralists, graffiti artists, another visual artist. I am very grateful to be a part of this project with so many other local artists whose work I have appreciated for years. |

"We Are Nature" - mural

We Are Nature is a mural created on a two story row home in Baltimore’s Broadway East Neighborhood. Dirk completed the mural in 2024.
We Are Nature is a visual reminder that we live in tandem with the life around us. The mural features the face of a young person immersed in a colorful procession of nature including some of Baltimore's flora and fauna. The mural was funded by ReBuild Metro and is installed at 1250 North Gay Street, Baltimore MD 21213 |

"The Magic Hour" - window installation

The Magic Hour was an installation in the window of The Central Branch of the Enoch Pratt Library System in Baltimore
The Magic Hour depicts an intimate moment, a father reading a book to his children as part of a bedtime routine. Nature Imagery and symbols float out of the book and into the air above them. One child is focused on the book and the other gazes at the floating imagery as they all huddle together. Dirk was awarded this commission in 2019 from EPFL. |
